I couldn't put this book down! It was a fun, fantastical read with enough historical facts to make me wish I had paid closer attention in my history classes. I would have been much more interested in history had my English teachers used books like these to make the facts more contextual and relevant. The reviewers with less than favorable remarks need to remember the intended audience-young adults, for whom this book is perfect (though this forty-something adult thoroughly enjoyed it)!

Originally I wasn't planning on writing a review for Kissing Shakespeare since I started this book two years ago and put it on hold until now but here I go.

So obviously I had some issues with this book. As some of you may now, I love historical fiction. I also love time travel... but in the end this book wasn't good enough for me to really like it.

I really liked the concept of Kissing Shakespeare with the time travel and everything. I just wasn't a fan of the writing, the conversations between the characters and the ending. Especially the ending.

Miranda, the main character... I had mixed feelings about her. It's not that I hated her. I just didn't like reading about her. She was an okay character but meh...
At some level I liked Stephen. I felt for him and everything he went through with his former fiancee and the whole time travel thing but sometimes he was a little careless about Miranda's feelings and I didn't like it.

However, I did root for Miranda and Stephen to be together. They did have chemistry and that's why I hated that ending so much. It was an ending that's open for speculation. If it was any other books I would think a second was would come but obviously there isn't a sequel in the making as far as I know. I just wanted a happy ending for them.

I guess I'll have to mention Shakespeare too. I actually don't have much to say about him. I'm pretty neutral on him. Didn't like him but didn't hate him either. As I said before it's a pretty good concept and we all know if Shakespeare would've strayed from his writing, things wouldn't be the same this day.

I didn't care for the writing either. It's probably a personal preference thing but it wasn't good enough to keep me interested. I hate to say this but it's my opinion. I wanted a little more action and a more exciting plot.

Although a bit disappointed by the characters, writing and plot, Kissing Shakespeare by Pamela Mindle did have a good concept. I liked the time travel and historical part of the book but in the end it wasn't for me.
After bombing a performance of The Taming of the Shrew, high school actress Miranda vows to forget about Shakespeare and find something else to do with her life. Little does she know that she is just moments away from getting up close and personal with the Bard himself.

Aided by Stephen Langford, a mysterious member of her cast, Miranda finds herself transported back in time to 16th century England. Her mission, according to Stephen seduce young William Shakespeare or risk the world losing its famous playwright to another fate. A complete fish out of water with very few options before her, Miranda agrees to masquerade as Stephen’s sister.

At Hoghton Tower, where Stephen’s relatives have hired Shakespeare as their schoolmaster, the duo find the household laden with merriment, mysteries, romance, and false identities galore. Miranda gets to play the role of a lifetime as Olivia, learning to fit into the unfamiliar time period and even locking lips with Will in her efforts to sway him away from becoming a Jesuit priest. As fun as it is to kiss Shakespeare, however, Miranda’s heart just may belong to someone else.

Will Miranda and Stephen be able to save Will Shakespeare from a dangerous fate? Will Miranda be free to follow her heart without her true identity being discovered? Most importantly of all, will she ever find her way back to her own time?

Kissing Shakespeare is a fun romp through history, and fans of Shakespeare’s work will enjoy getting to meet him as a young man in this fantasy.

Miranda is the teenage daughter of a pair of Shakespearean actors. She loves the stage, but how can she ever hope to live up her mother, let alone excel? Does she even want to? When her first performance as Katherina, in The Taming of the Shrew, doesn't go well, Miranda can hardly bear to attend the cast party. She has let her parents down—and herself. So when a fellow cast member calls on her to join him in a strange and mysterious quest to save Shakespeare and his works, Miranda plays along, only to find herself transported to the 16th century, where views of women are only some of the challenges she faces.

Mingle's touch is deft, the cultural clashes alternately humorous and dramatic, and the characters both believable and appealing. Definitely one for the keeper shelf.

Note that this book is marketed as YA. Also that I interviewed the author regarding a later book, which I did not rate or review as a result even though I loved it. But this review reflects my honest opinion, and I did purchase the book (through iTunes).
This book is fun and flirty! The author takes the old and makes it new! Fast paced with characters you can care about.
I loved every page of this book! And would defiantly recommend it to anyone who is looking to read a book about love that could never work out.
Enjoyed the story. As a former English major, especially liked seeing how Mingle weaves in so many accurate details of the period.
I thought this story was so entertaining! I loved the characters and the fact that the story had a historical undertone. Stephen was the perfect gentleman and Miranda was perfect as a present day young girl trying to do what was asked of her in probably the most difficult role of her acting career! I can't wait for the next time they meet!
