I read this book through the lens of an expert in domestic violence. When I began, I was unsure if this narrative, like so many others, would leave me feeling frustrated that another author with a good story line does not understand how trauma affects the body and brain. However, I was pleasantly surprised.I found Downey’s portrayal of the survivor quite accurate. It may not be the average behaviors one would expect from a victim—but they were common, nonetheless. In fact, I appreciated this narrative more because it portrayed the lesser known ways a person might respond to being free of violence.
I noticed various (non-expert) reviewers assume Downey’s story becomes unrealistic at times. But quite honestly, even hyper-sexuality is a normal response to being free from violence.
This story works to normalize the experience for survivors who feel like they are on the outside, who respond to freedom from domestic abuse in a way like the character here. Downey makes it clear that if you are like her main character, it is okay. It is as if her characters say: Don’t let the reviewers on Amazon or the judgers in your own life declare what is a normal response after violence. We all respond differently to extreme violence and the story here shows one of those ways that is completely normal.

Shattered Scarred The Sacred Hearts MC edition by AJ Downey Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
4.5* Well hello there new author to me!!! How have I not read your books before now?? I love a good MC book that gives you dirty, gritty, dark and love and this one hits all the points. I'm kind of particular when it comes to the MC genre but I will definitely be reading more of this series.
Trig and Ashton just click. She brings out the best in him and he soothes her soul. The other members of the MC can be jerks but they can also be sweet. I want to know MORE about all of them!!!
Hooked me right from page one. Everything so tastefully done. I love the boys of The Sacred Hearts MC. I have known wonderful bikers in my life...all of them fierce protectors of women and children. A.J. thank you for taking me back to those amazing days. I am on to the next adventure in this series...happy trails
SPOILER - I read another MC novel by A J Downey that I liked, Brother to Brother. So I took a chance and bought this one, thinking to start a new series. I made it to about the 70% mark, fine with the story of an abused wife finding redemption with a biker who took good care of her. Suddenly, boom! A threesome! Yes, this protective and possessive biker abruptly decides to share his broken, shy, barely able to function woman with a pal. And she's fine with it. I couldn't even be bothered to finish the book, I was so disgusted by this preposterous plot point.
Hey, a little warning next time. At least put two men on the cover so I'll know that is gonna happen. Delete!
I've had this series on my wishlist for a while now and as soon as this book went on sale I had to grab it! I really liked it for the most part despite a few issues (editing errors, changing POV from one sentence to the next with no warning) and although the sequence of events was a bit rushed and at times unrealistic, I really liked the couple of Ashton and Ethan "Trigger".
The action in this MC romance was more about protecting Ashton from her abusive husband and his bodyguards and less about the actual MC business that most biker books deal with. I did also notice that all the women (from the club whores to the old ladies) were extremely nice...no nasty, crazy catfights and that was different as well. The Sacred Hearts seemed to be more about family and their brotherhood in arms and less about illegal or criminal activities (with the exception of getting revenge).
If you like a biker book with more romance and focused on relationships and not the club per se...then this book is for you. Don't be surprised if you start humming the soundtrack to Les Mis after reading though...lol!
**** 4 **** "a broken princess and her white knight" stars
Reading Tip I HIGHLY recommend you read this series in order and DON'T skip or skim. This book, even the short novella, holds a lot of information and it all is one continuous story in regards to the danger Sacred Hearts are in with the Suicide Kings. The S.K MC shows up in book 2 and carries the series out into book 6. I wouldn't claim any book in this series to be a standalone, especially book 3.5 - so much NEW stuff happens to carry the story forward.
Ethan- aka Trigger- is a former US Marine sniper. He came out a bit messed up and got mixed up in drugs. It's during that time he becomes friends with Reaver. I won't give Reaver's real name away. It's a surprise until his story in book 3. Anyway, they get cleaned up and start join the Sacred Hearts MC.
Ashton- aka Sunshine- meet when her husband leaves her to walk home, in the freezing cold weather, on the side of a highway. Trigger comes upon her and becomes her savior.
Trigger brings her back to his MC and it stirs up the ire of the Vice President, Dray- who is book 2. She's frighten, beaten, and has no family or place to go. Trigger decides to take her on and keep her as his old lady. They just have to get approval from the MC to stay at the club, fight a war against Ashton's crazy husband, and deal with the broody, jerky Dray.
In this book we will also be introduced to the book 4's hero, Derek. He and Trigger served in the military together.
Ashton, Trigger, and Reaver will develop a deep bond with each other and later in the book, they take a moment to explore a little further into that relationship during a trip to the lake on a run. At first, I wasn't sure about this- as it made no sense as Trigger thought the sun rose and set with Ashton. They were so beyond in love, I just couldn't fathom why they went the route they did. Later though, I understood it. There was a healthy dose of attraction with Reaver and Ashton and luckily their moment with Trigger isn't made dirty or raunchy.
This story focuses on Trigger realizing he deserves someone as good as Sunshine. Sunshine learns to find love, trust and friendship with others. And the club falls in love with Sunshine and find a way to protect her from her husband.
This story did have editing issues that needed to be cleaned up. It also drove me nuts when it used the word INTONE in different forms at least 14 times.
What I liked
1. Trigger, Reaver and Ashton's bond
2. The relationship between Trigger and Ashton
3. The Sacred Hearts MC guys
4. Likeable cast of characters
5. The flow of the story
6. No cheating
7. How things work out
8. The MC is pretty good, unless they have to protect their own, and there really isn't any club whores to jack up the story.
Reading Order
1. Shattered & Scarred
2. Broken & Burned
3. Cracked & Crushed
3.5 Masked & Miserable
4. Tattered & Torn
5. Fractured & Formidable
6. Damaged & Dangerous The Sacred Hearts MC Book VI
