Breakout The Dred Chronicles Book 3 eBook Ann Aguirre
What a wonderful conclusion to a fantastic series. I loved that Dred was such a strong, courageous, deadly fighter, but she still has the capacity to love Jael and care for her friends. She has called a truce with the mercenary commander Vost and his few remaining men, and they have come up with a plan to put together a transport out of scrap that will hopefully get them off of Perdition, using Vost’s transport codes. Now if only they can stay alive long enough to pull off their plan. Silence is the only other leader left, but she has plenty of silent assassins left and is determined to take out every one of Dred’s people. It’s a good thing Jael and Dred are such skilled and determined fighters, since any normal human would be long gone from what they go through. There is plenty of action, but there are a few moments to catch their breath and think too, as they learn more about the previous inhabitants of the station and start to think about what happens once they get off Perdition. Of course, if they can actually escape, there won’t be an easy road for any of them, but if anyone can pull it off, it will be Dred and Jael. I adored the conclusion; after all of the bloody battles and hardships, it was wonderful to see some happiness for this group.Tags : Breakout (The Dred Chronicles Book 3) - Kindle edition by Ann Aguirre. Breakout The Dred Chronicles Book 3 eBook Ann Aguirre Reviews
I liked the Dred Chronicles. It was interesting, a little different and easy to read. Not as good as the Grimspace series, but an ok spinoff. What got my ire was that this was ONE book spread out over 3 years that I had to pay for 3 times. The installments do not stand alone at all and are short. This 3rd section wraps everything up almost too cleanly in a classic romance novel kind of way, which is a bit ironic. If you liked Grimspace, you will like this, just get ready to spend $20+ for one book.
This is the third in the series; if you haven't, read the other two first, this is not a stand alone book.
I love her series. This was so enjoyable, I always greatly anticipated the next release......sadly, it seems this one is over. ( Now I have to wait for a new one.....but, I know it will be worth it!
If you haven't read Ann Aguirre yet, pick up one of her series that is done, then you can have the delight of gorging on a whole series at once; I envy you! I may have to go back and do that myself ;)
Loved the character development; can you say strong women? No delicate little flowers here. I love strong female characters that don't have to bash men to be strong. The development of her characters and worlds is fantastic.
Breakout picks up pretty much right where book 2, Havoc, ended and, in keeping with the rest of the series, is pretty much action-packed all the way through. Our heroes (Can you refer to a group of murderous convicts as heroes? In this series, yes, yes you can.) are in dire peril from page one and the tension barely lets up *at all* until at least 3/4 of the way through the book. That last 1/4 is largely epilogue-ish and that is completely okay with me. Readers *needed* that well-paced resolution and closure after going through so much physical and emotional trauma with these characters. And these characters. I love them. People She made me love hardened killers. What else is there to say about how great this series is? If you've already read Perdition and Havoc, I can't imagine any reason you wouldn't be picking up Breakout and, like me, devouring it as soon as possible. But for anyone who hasn't started the series yet ... if you're into action-packed (violent) Space Opera with thought-provoking subtext on human nature and peppered with dark humor and unexpected turns ... The Dred Chronicles will satisfy.
Alright, I am going to start out this review with something that doesn't happen all the time. I am going to come out and say that the Dred Chronicles might be up there with my all time favorite books. I read a lot of books and not very often do I come across any that are special or that I really really love. Perdition, Havoc and Breakout are three books that I can say that I absolutely loved. There is action, violence, romance and a little bit of intrigue. Just the perfect amount of each, not too much romance or intrigue and the right amount of action and violence to be one of the best series that I have ever read. And trust me, that is saying a lot, I am a very tough critic.
Breakout follows immediately after Havoc with Dred and company trying to survive Perdition and escape alive. This book had the same mix of sci-fi romance and violent action as the others. I really enjoyed the characters, Dred and Jael especially. They have the kind of chemistry that is hard to write but Aguirre does it perfectly and you can really feel the connection between them. Tam, Martine and Calypso are great secondary characters. There is not much depth to Martine or Calypso but Tam is interesting and it leaves you wanting to know more about him. We also get to see more about Vost and the mercenaries sent to wipe Perdition clean. Vost actually turns into a more defined character and even though I didn't like him much, I was still interested to see how he fit into the story.
Breakout is different than Havoc or Perdition because you just didn't know how the book would end. Would it leave me angry and throwing it against the wall or would I be happy with how it ended? Aguirre does an awesome job with the ending and it made me happy that the ending didn't ruin the series for me. There were mentions of Sirantha Jax in these books that left me wanting to reread that series so I could remember what happened with Jael earlier.
Overall, I am giving this book a 5 out of 5 star rating. That is quite a feat since I don't give those out hardly ever. The whole series is extremely good and I think that 3 books was the perfect length and when the story was done I didn't feel like I needed any more, it was perfect the way that it was. I am very happy with the ending, the writing was awesome and the characters were very memorable. I would recommend this book to sci-fi fans everywhere who enjoy fast paced action with a little bit of romance thrown in. I would also like to applaud Ann Aguirre for writing what I consider to be one of the most perfect sci-fi books/series ever written.
